The Life of God in the Soul

Living in the State of Grace

To be in the state of grace is to carry the very life of God within you — to be His friend, His child, alive with His own life. It is the most precious thing you possess, and the most worth protecting. Here is how to keep it, and how to recover it if it is lost.

What the State of Grace Is

Sanctifying grace is God’s own life poured into the soul — first given in Baptism, restored in Confession, and strengthened in the Eucharist. It makes us truly children of God, partakers of the divine nature, and heirs of heaven.

To live in this grace is to live in friendship with God. It is the state in which we are meant to receive Holy Communion, and the state in which we hope to meet Him at the end. Nothing the world offers comes close to its worth — and only one thing can drive it out: deliberate, grave sin.

“Grace is favour, the free and undeserved help that God gives us to respond to his call to become children of God.”

Catechism of the Catholic Church · §1996

Mortal & Venial Sin

Not all sin is equal. Knowing the difference is not scrupulosity — it is how we guard the life of grace.

Mortal sin

A grave act that breaks our friendship with God, draining the soul of sanctifying grace. Three things must all be present:

  • Grave matter — something seriously wrong.
  • Full knowledge — you knew it was gravely wrong.
  • Deliberate consent — you freely chose it anyway.

If any of the three is missing, the sin is not mortal — but mortal sin should be brought to Confession before receiving Communion.

Venial sin

A lesser fault that wounds our love for God without killing it. It weakens the soul and disposes us toward greater sin, but does not destroy the life of grace within us.

  • Less serious matter, or
  • Lacking full knowledge or full consent.

Venial sins are healed through prayer, charity, the Eucharist, and Confession — which is still greatly encouraged for them.

Daily Habits That Keep You Close

Holiness is built not from grand gestures but from small, faithful habits, repeated with love.

  1. 1

    A Morning Offering

Begin the day by giving it to God before anything else claims it: “O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass… for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart. Amen.”

  2. 2

    A nightly examination of conscience

Before sleep, spend a few quiet minutes reviewing the day with God — thanking Him for graces, noticing where you fell, and resolving to begin again tomorrow.

  3. 3

    Regular Confession

Don't wait until something is wrong. Frequent Confession — even monthly — keeps the soul clean, the conscience tender, and grace flowing.

  4. 4

    The daily Rosary

A few decades each day place you under Our Lady's mantle and steady the soul against temptation.

  5. 5

    The Mass

Faithful Sunday Mass is the heart of the week; daily Mass, where possible, is a wellspring of grace. The Eucharist is the food that keeps the soul alive.

When You Fall

Get Back Up

Every saint was a sinner who kept beginning again. If you fall — even gravely, even often — do not lie there in discouragement, for discouragement is the enemy’s favourite trap. Make an act of contrition, return to Confession as soon as you can, and rise. The Father is always watching the road, ready to run to meet you. The measure of holiness is not never falling, but always getting up.
