The Sacrament of Reconciliation
Welcome Home
If it has been five years, or twenty-five, or you can no longer remember — you are exactly the person this page was written for. There is nothing to fear here, and no shame waiting for you. Only a Father who has been watching the road, hoping you’d come.
If it’s been a while
Most people carry a quiet reason they’ve stayed away. Here are the ones we hear most — and the truth that meets each of them.
“I won’t remember what to do.”
That’s alright. The priest will guide you through every step, and the whole way is laid out below. You don’t need to get it perfect.
“My sins are too serious.”
There is no sin greater than the mercy of God. Whatever you carry, He has already run out to meet you — and longs to forgive it.
“The priest will judge me.”
He is there as a physician of the soul, not a judge. He has heard it all before, and he is bound by an absolute, unbreakable seal of secrecy.
“It’s been too long.”
Years — even decades — are no obstacle. Simply tell the priest how long it’s been, and he will gently help you with the rest.
“While he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.”
How to Make a Good Confession
Nine simple steps. Read them once and you’ll be ready — the priest carries the rest.
- 1
Examine your conscience
Take a few quiet minutes beforehand to let the Holy Spirit bring things to mind. The examination further down this page can help.
- 2
Be truly sorry
What matters most is contrition — genuine sorrow for having turned from God, and the desire to begin again. He asks for your heart, not perfect words.
- 3
Go to the church
Find a scheduled confession time or call the parish office. You may kneel behind a screen or sit face-to-face — whichever puts you more at peace.
- 4
Begin
Make the Sign of the Cross with the priest and say: “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been ___ since my last confession.”
- 5
Confess your sins
Tell your sins simply and honestly. You don’t need careful language. If you feel lost, just say so — the priest will gently help you along.
- 6
Listen
The priest may offer a few words of encouragement and counsel. He will give you a penance — usually a short prayer or a small act of love.
- 7
Pray the Act of Contrition
Express your sorrow to God, in your own words or with the traditional prayer below.
- 8
Receive absolution
The priest pronounces the words of absolution. In that moment your sins are forgiven — truly, completely, and forever.
- 9
Go in peace
Step back into the world lighter than you came. Complete your penance soon, and begin again in grace.
The Act of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin. Amen.
An Examination of Conscience
This is not a test, and not a list of accusations. It’s a quiet moment to sit with the Lord and let Him gently bring to mind what needs healing. Take it slowly. Be honest, and be kind to yourself.
In your love for God
Have I kept Him at the center?
- Have I made time to pray, or let the noise of life crowd Him out?
- Have I missed Mass on Sundays or holy days through my own fault?
- Have I used God’s name carelessly, or in anger?
- Have I put other things — money, success, comfort, approval — before Him?
- Have I been ashamed of my faith, or let it quietly slip away?
In your love for others
Have I seen people as God sees them?
- Have I been harsh, impatient, or unkind with those closest to me?
- Have I honored my parents and cared for those entrusted to me?
- Have I gossiped, judged, or wounded someone’s good name?
- Have I been honest — or have I lied, cheated, or taken what isn’t mine?
- Have I forgiven those who hurt me, or held on to anger?
- Have I been pure and faithful in my relationships, in body and in heart?
In your love for yourself
Have I honored the life God gave me?
- Have I cared for my body and soul, or harmed myself through excess?
- Have I given in to pride, envy, or despair?
- Have I wasted the time and gifts God entrusted to me?
- Have I been grateful, or taken His blessings for granted?
Ask in confidence
Still wondering about something?
Ask anything about Confession and receive the Church’s own words — quoted from the Catechism, cited, and linked to the source. Nothing you type is stored or shared. Tap a question to begin, or write your own.
This tool shares the Church’s teaching — it is not the sacrament itself, and not a substitute for your priest. For absolution, and for anything weighing on your heart, go to him. He is waiting.
