The Sacrament of Holy Orders
Called to Serve
Through Holy Orders, a man is configured to Christ the Servant and Shepherd, set apart to lay down his life for God’s people. If the call stirs in you — even faintly — do not be afraid to listen. God does the choosing; you need only respond.
If you sense a call — or aren’t sure
Discernment is rarely loud or instant. Here are the doubts most men carry, gently met.
“I could never be holy enough.”
No one is. God calls the willing, not the perfect, and forms them over time. Holiness is the fruit of the priesthood, not its entrance exam.
“How do I know if I’m really called?”
A call is discerned, not simply felt — through prayer, the sacraments, and honest conversation with a priest or director. Clarity comes by walking, not waiting.
“Am I giving up too much?”
Celibacy and obedience are not losses but gifts freely offered — a heart given wholly to God and his people, fruitful in ways the world doesn’t expect.
“I want to support vocations, but how?”
Pray for those discerning, encourage the men you know, and support seminarians spiritually and materially. Every vocation is sustained by a community.
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit.”
Discerning a Call
Discernment is a relationship, not a test. Here is how many men begin.
- 1
Pray, especially before the Eucharist
Spend time with the Lord in silence and Adoration. Vocations are born in prayer; ask him simply, “What do you want of me?”
- 2
Live the sacraments
Frequent Confession and the Eucharist. A soul in friendship with God hears his voice more clearly.
- 3
Talk to a priest
Open the question with a priest you trust, or seek a spiritual director. Speaking it aloud often brings unexpected peace.
- 4
Contact the vocations office
Every diocese and religious community has one. They will accompany you — no commitment, just companionship in discernment.
- 5
Come and see
Visit a seminary or community on a “come and see” weekend. Discernment grows by encounter, not only by thinking.
- 6
Apply and be formed
When the time is right, you apply for seminary, where years of human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral formation prepare you.
A Prayer for Vocations
Lord of the harvest, send laborers into your harvest. Raise up among us men generous enough to follow you as priests and deacons. Give those you call the courage to answer, and give us all the grace to support them. Amen.
Understanding the Call
What Holy Orders is, and how you can support those who answer.
The Three Degrees
One sacrament, three expressions.
- Bishop — the fullness of Holy Orders, a successor of the Apostles who shepherds a diocese.
- Priest — a co-worker of the bishop who celebrates the sacraments and cares for souls.
- Deacon — ordained for service: the Word, the altar, and works of charity.
Supporting Seminarians & Vocations
Every priest is the fruit of a praying people.
- Pray daily for vocations and for those in formation.
- Encourage the young men you know; a word can plant a seed.
- Support your diocese’s seminarian fund, or “adopt a seminarian” in prayer.
- Foster a home and parish culture where a call can be heard.
