The Most Holy Eucharist

The Source and Summit

At the heart of the Catholic faith is not an idea but a Person. In the Eucharist, Jesus Christ — Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity — gives himself entirely to you. This is the source from which everything flows, and the summit toward which everything rises.

If you’ve wondered about the Eucharist

The Real Presence is the most astonishing claim of the faith — and the most consoling. Here are the questions people most often ask.

“Isn’t it just a symbol?”

No. The Church holds, as she always has, that the bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Christ. It only appears to be bread; it is the Lord himself.

“I haven’t been to Confession — can I receive?”

If you are aware of grave sin, the loving path is to go to Confession first, then receive with a clear heart. The two sacraments are meant to be friends.

“I feel unworthy to receive him.”

We all are — and still he comes. Approach with humility and reverence, not despair. The Eucharist is medicine for the weak, not a reward for the perfect.

“I can’t get to Mass right now.”

Even then, you can unite your heart to Christ through a Spiritual Communion — a heartfelt prayer of longing for him, which he always hears.

“He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.”

John 6:56 — The Bread of Life Discourse

How to Receive Worthily

To receive the Lord well is to receive him with a heart prepared. A few simple steps.

  1. 1

Be in a state of grace

If you are conscious of mortal sin, go to Confession before receiving. To receive worthily is to receive in friendship with God.

  2. 2

    Keep the Eucharistic fast

Ordinarily, abstain from food and drink (water and medicine excepted) for one hour before receiving — a small act of reverent hunger.

  3. 3

    Approach with reverence

Come forward prayerfully. A bow before receiving is a fitting gesture of adoration for the One you are about to meet.

  4. 4

    Receive with faith

When the priest or minister says “The Body of Christ,” answer “Amen” — an act of belief — and receive on the tongue or in the hand.

  5. 5

    Give thanks

Return to your place and spend the moments after Communion in silent thanksgiving. The Lord is now within you; rest with him.

A Spiritual Communion (St. Alphonsus Liguori)

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there, and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Beyond the Mass

The Eucharist is not only received — it is adored. Two ways to draw nearer.

Eucharistic Adoration

Time alone with the Lord, truly present.

  • The consecrated Host is exposed in a monstrance, and the faithful come to pray before Christ himself.
  • You need do nothing but be present — speak to him, listen, or simply rest in silence.
  • Many parishes offer holy hours or perpetual adoration; all are welcome, no preparation required.

Spiritual Communion

When you cannot receive sacramentally.

  • A prayer expressing faith in the Real Presence and a longing to receive him.
  • A gift for the homebound, the sick, travelers, or anyone away from Mass.
  • It deepens desire for the Eucharist and keeps the heart turned toward Christ.

Ask in confidence

Still have questions about the Eucharist?

Ask anything and receive the Church’s own words — quoted from the Catechism, cited, and linked to the source. Tap a question to begin, or write your own.

This tool shares the Church’s teaching — it is not a substitute for your parish. To receive the Eucharist, come to Mass; to be reconciled first, see a priest.

Come to the Table

Christ waits for you in every tabernacle on earth. Find a Mass or a time of Adoration near you, and come to the One who gives himself entirely.
