The Sacrament of Confirmation

Sealed with the Spirit

Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism, sealing you with the Holy Spirit and strengthening you to live and witness to the faith. Whether you are preparing now or never received it, the Spirit is ready to be poured out — fully, and for you.

If you’re preparing — or were never confirmed

Confirmation can feel like a formality you missed, or a step you’re unsure about. Here is what people most often ask.

“I was confirmed but felt nothing changed.”

Grace is real whether or not we feel it. The Spirit’s gifts were truly given; they unfold across a lifetime as you cooperate with them in prayer and love.

“I’m an adult and was never confirmed.”

You can be. Many parishes prepare adults for Confirmation each year. It’s never too late to be sealed with the Spirit and complete your initiation.

“I don’t think I know enough.”

Preparation exists precisely for that. You’ll be taught and accompanied — Confirmation asks for an open heart, not a finished education.

“How do I even choose a saint?”

Prayerfully and without pressure. A patron saint becomes a friend and intercessor — choose one whose life stirs something in you. The guide below can help.

“They laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 8:17 — The Apostles in Samaria

Preparing for Confirmation

The path is straightforward, whether you are a young person or an adult.

  1. 1

    Talk to your parish

Ask about Confirmation preparation. Adults are often prepared alongside OCIA or in a dedicated group.

  2. 2

    Be formed in the faith

A season of catechesis on the Creed, the sacraments, prayer, and the moral life — deepening what Baptism began.

  3. 3

    Choose a sponsor

A confirmed, practicing Catholic who will support your faith. Fittingly, a baptismal godparent can serve as sponsor.

  4. 4

    Choose a Confirmation saint

Take a patron whose life inspires you; you may take their name. They become a lifelong intercessor and friend.

  5. 5

    Receive the sacrament

The bishop (or a delegated priest) lays hands on you and anoints your forehead with sacred chrism: “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Come, Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth. Amen.

The Gifts, and Your Saint

What the Spirit gives, and how to choose the saint who will walk with you.

The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Given to strengthen and guide you.

  • Wisdom — to see and love as God does.
  • Understanding — to grasp the truths of faith.
  • Counsel — to know the right thing to do.
  • Fortitude — courage to do it, even when it’s hard.
  • Knowledge — to see the world in light of God.
  • Piety — a loving devotion toward God as Father.
  • Fear of the Lord — wonder and awe in his presence.

Choosing a Patron Saint

A friend for the journey.

  • Read a few saints’ lives; notice whose story moves or challenges you.
  • Consider a saint connected to your name, vocation, struggles, or hopes.
  • Ask the saint, in prayer, to make their patronage clear.
  • You may take the saint’s name as your Confirmation name.
